The Florence Pioneer Museum and Research Center is proud to present a wonderful collection of arrowheads donated by Dixie Sluder in memory of her daughter Traci Sluder who died in December 2020. Traci was an avid arrowhead hunter, and, when on hikes with relatives and friends searching for the past, she just had a special eye out for arrowheads.
The Florence Pioneer Museum would like to thank Penny McPherson from the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center in Cañon City who helped FPM catalog and identify the arrowhead collection. There are projectile points, complete and incomplete, flakes, awls and blades. These artifacts range from several time periods such as the Middle Archaic period, the Late Archaic Period and most are of the late Prehistoric Stage, Developmental Period.
Ms. McPherson has created a spread-sheet to explain each artifact and its special qualities. Ms. McPherson has also created a flash drive of pictures of the arrowheads. If you would like to come and see the arrowheads in person and look at the flash drive, the museum will be glad to set up a laptop for you to view the arrowheads with the spread sheet.
The Florence Pioneer Museum and Research Center continues to be open with social distancing protocols in place. There is a $5 admission charge with children 8 and under free. The business hours can be found on its website: at www.florencepioneermuseum.org.
